Terms of Service

These Terms of Service govern your access to and use of HippoSplit, including our website, app, APIs, and related services. By using HippoSplit, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use HippoSplit.

The Service

HippoSplit helps people record, split, and settle shared expenses. You can create groups, invite other people, add expenses, upload receipts, use AI-assisted parsing, track balances, and view reports.

HippoSplit is a shared ledger and expense-tracking tool. Expenses, balances, IOUs, reminders, settlement suggestions, and payment records in HippoSplit are informal records created by users. They are not legal, financial, tax, accounting, or debt-collection advice, and HippoSplit does not guarantee that any user will pay another user.

Eligibility

You may use HippoSplit only if you can legally agree to these Terms and are not prohibited from using the service under applicable law. You may not use HippoSplit if you are under 13 years old.

If you use HippoSplit for an organization or another person, you represent that you have authority to accept these Terms on their behalf.

Accounts And Guests

Some features may require an account. You agree to provide accurate information and keep your account secure. You are responsible for activity under your account.

HippoSplit may allow guests to join groups through invite links. Guest access may be limited and may depend on the link holder retaining access. Group creators and members should only invite people they trust.

Groups And User Content

You are responsible for the information you create, upload, share, or enter into HippoSplit, including group names, member names, expense descriptions, comments, receipt images, amounts, currencies, split rules, and settlement records.

When you add content to a shared group or expense, you authorize HippoSplit to display and process that content for the people you shared it with. Other group members may be able to view, edit, comment on, delete, restore, or otherwise interact with shared records depending on HippoSplit’s product behavior and permissions.

You keep ownership of your content. You grant HippoSplit a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, process, display, transmit, and create technical derivatives of your content as needed to provide, secure, support, and improve the service.

You must have the right to share any content you submit. Do not upload sensitive information, payment card images, government IDs, private documents, or other information that is not needed to split expenses.

AI-Assisted Features

HippoSplit may use AI or automated systems to read receipt photos, parse messages, extract line items, suggest categories, convert currencies, or prepare split details.

AI output may be incomplete, inaccurate, or inappropriate for your situation. You are responsible for reviewing, correcting, and approving expense details before relying on them. HippoSplit does not guarantee that AI output, exchange rates, reports, balances, or settlement suggestions are error-free.

AI parsing is offered as part of your plan and is subject to fair use. Plan allowances and fair-use limits may change over time.

For group AI parsing, the group creator’s plan determines what AI features are available to the group. If parsing fails, times out, produces no expense, or produces an output you choose not to use, the request still counts toward any applicable plan allowance. We may review support requests case by case.

Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use HippoSplit for fraud, money laundering, illegal transactions, harassment, threats, abuse, or deceptive activity.
  • Add false, misleading, invasive, or unlawful content.
  • Share another person’s private information without permission.
  • Upload malware, spam, offensive material, or content that infringes another person’s rights.
  • Interfere with, overload, disrupt, reverse engineer, scrape, or bypass HippoSplit systems.
  • Access another user’s account, group, or data without permission.
  • Use HippoSplit to send unsolicited messages or advertising.
  • Resell, mirror, or commercially exploit the service without our written permission.
  • Violate applicable laws, payment provider rules, app store rules, or these Terms.

We may investigate suspected violations and may remove content, restrict features, suspend accounts, terminate access, or cooperate with legal authorities.

HippoSplit may offer paid subscriptions and premium features.

Current paid terms include:

  • Premium subscription: $5.99/month or $49.99/year.
  • Premium AI parsing: unlimited under fair use. See the Fair Use Policy for details on what “unlimited” means and when usage may be paused.
  • Free plan AI parsing: up to 7 AI parses per week, reset every Monday, under fair use. Unused parses do not roll over.

These values are product configuration and may change. The price, taxes, billing interval, renewal terms, and included benefits shown at checkout apply to your purchase.

Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled before the renewal date. You can manage eligible subscriptions through the billing portal or the app store account used for purchase, if applicable. If a subscription is canceled, premium access usually continues until the end of the paid billing period unless otherwise stated.

Third-Party Services

HippoSplit may integrate with third-party services such as payment processors, app stores, authentication providers, cloud providers, analytics tools, AI providers, email providers, and support tools. Their own terms and privacy policies may apply.

HippoSplit is not responsible for third-party services, payment networks, app stores, banks, or external payment apps.

No Professional Advice

HippoSplit does not provide legal, financial, tax, accounting, investment, debt-collection, or payment advice. Reports and balances are for convenience and depend on user-entered information.

Service Changes And Availability

HippoSplit may change, suspend, restrict, or discontinue features at any time. We aim to provide a reliable service, but we do not guarantee that HippoSplit will always be available, secure, uninterrupted, or error-free.

Termination

You may stop using HippoSplit at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, create risk for HippoSplit or others, fail to pay amounts due, or if required by law.

Some provisions of these Terms will continue after termination, including payment obligations, ownership and license terms, warranty disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity, and dispute terms.

Disclaimers

HippoSplit is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, availability, and reliability.

We do not guarantee that expense records, AI output, balances, settlement suggestions, exchange rates, reports, or shared user content will be accurate or complete.

Limitation Of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, HippoSplit and its operators, employees, contractors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, business interruption, loss of goodwill, or unauthorized access arising from your use of the service.

Any total liability will be limited to the amount you paid to HippoSplit for the service in the 12 months before the claim, or USD $100, whichever is greater, unless applicable law requires otherwise.

Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless HippoSplit and its operators from claims, damages, liabilities, losses, and expenses arising from your use of the service, your content, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of another person’s rights.

Changes To These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If changes are material, we will provide notice as required by law. Continued use of HippoSplit after updated Terms become effective means you accept the updated Terms.

Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Mexico, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. You and HippoSplit agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in New Mexico for any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of HippoSplit, except where applicable law gives you the right to bring an action in your local courts.
