Fair Use Policy

This Fair Use Policy explains what “Unlimited” means for HippoSplit Premium subscribers. It covers AI-assisted features such as receipt photo parsing and text-to-expense parsing, and is part of our Terms of Service.

What “Unlimited” Means

Premium gives you access to AI-assisted parsing without a fixed monthly cap. There is no per-day quota, no per-week quota, and no countdown of remaining parses. You can scan receipts, paste messages, and let HippoSplit do the parsing whenever you need it.

“Unlimited” is offered under fair use. It is intended to cover the realistic personal and household needs of a Premium subscriber, not industrial-scale, automated, or commercial bulk processing.

Typical Usage

For context, comfortable typical usage sits around a few hundred AI parses per month, roughly the volume a busy household, frequent traveler, or active group organizer would generate. Most subscribers stay well below that range and never run into any limits.

You do not need to track or count your parses. We do not display a remaining-parses counter for Premium because it is not meant to influence how you use the product.

When Fair Use Applies

We may temporarily pause AI parsing for an account that shows excessive sustained usage well beyond typical personal use, especially when the pattern looks automated, scripted, or otherwise inconsistent with normal interactive use.

If your AI parsing is paused under this policy:

  • Your subscription, group data, balances, and non-AI features are not affected.
  • You will see a clear message in the app indicating that AI parsing is temporarily limited.
  • You can contact support (see below) to discuss your usage and have parsing restored.

This policy is intended as a safeguard against abuse and runaway automation, not as a hidden cap on legitimate use.

What Fair Use Does Not Cover

Even on a Premium plan, Fair Use does not authorize:

  • Sharing one Premium account across many users to bypass plan limits.
  • Automated or scripted parsing of large batches of receipts on behalf of a third party.
  • Reselling AI parsing capacity, white-labeling output, or wrapping HippoSplit’s AI features in another product.
  • Use that violates the Terms of Service acceptable-use rules.

Heavy but genuine personal use is welcome. The above is about misuse, not volume.

Changes To This Policy

We may update this policy as our infrastructure and pricing evolve. Material changes affecting how Fair Use is enforced will be communicated in-product or via email when reasonably possible.
