About HippoSplit

HippoSplit is a chat-first expense tracker. We built it specifically for those frustrating moments when splitting costs gets messy: like a group dinner where appetizers were shared but only some people ordered beer, a shared household with bills piling up and no one tracking who owes what, or a trip abroad where every receipt is in a different currency and the math becomes painful.

Instead of forms, HippoSplit gives each group a shared chat. Simply type a quick description or snap photos of your receipts (even multiple at once), and the AI instantly parses line items, taxes, tips, currencies, and suggests fair splits. You’re always in full control: you can review, edit, or adjust anything anytime, so the final split matches exactly what your group wants.

What We Believe

  • Tracking expenses should feel like messaging, not bookkeeping. Most expenses start as a conversation, “I got this one”, “send me the receipt”, “what did that come to?”. Keeping the entry experience conversational means people actually log expenses in the moment instead of forgetting them by the time they get home.
  • Let the AI do the boring bits. Snap a receipt or paste a message, and our smart parsing sorts out the items, tax, tip, and currency for you. Expenses just show up in the group, ready to go.
  • Privacy is part of the product. We don’t sell your data, we don’t run third-party advertising, and we keep logging to what’s needed to run the service. See our Privacy Policy for the details.
  • Free should be genuinely useful. The free plan covers the typical household or trip. Premium exists for people who scan a lot.

How HippoSplit Works

  • Create a group and share an invite link. Guests can join without an account.
  • Add expenses by chat message or receipt photo. AI extracts the details.
  • Adjust the split anytime (equal, by items, custom, or percentages), or mention how to split when you send the receipt (“just me and Alex”, “split by items”) and the AI takes it from there.
  • Watch balances update in real time as the group adds, edits, or settles up.
  • Settle with simplified payments so the group makes the fewest transfers possible.

Who Builds HippoSplit

HippoSplit is built and operated by Haru LLC, a small, independent software company based in New Mexico, USA. We work on it because we wanted a better expense tracker for our own trips and households, and we kept it small on purpose: no ads, no investors leaning on us to upsell, no roadmap dictated by a growth team.
