HippoSplit helps people track, split, and settle shared expenses. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how it is shared, and the choices you have.

By using HippoSplit, you agree that your information will be handled as described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use HippoSplit.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

We may collect information that you choose to provide, including:

  • Account details such as your name, email address, login method, profile information, and account settings.
  • Group and expense content such as group names, member names, expense titles, amounts, currencies, categories, dates, payer details, split rules, comments, notes, reminders, settlement records, and recurring expense settings.
  • Receipt and image uploads, including photos that you upload so HippoSplit can extract expenses, line items, taxes, tips, totals, merchants, currencies, and other details.
  • Messages and instructions you enter into HippoSplit, including text used to create, edit, or explain expenses.
  • Support messages, feedback, feature requests, and other communications you send to us.
  • Billing-related information when you buy a subscription. Payment card details are handled by our payment processor and are not stored directly by HippoSplit.

Information Shared By Other Users

Other HippoSplit users may add you to a group, share an expense with you, invite you by link, or enter your name or contact information so the group can split costs. When that happens, the shared information may be stored in HippoSplit and shown to the people who are part of that group or expense.

Information Collected Automatically

When you use HippoSplit, we may collect technical and usage information, including:

  • Device type, browser, operating system, app version, language, and approximate location derived from network information.
  • IP address, request metadata, timestamps, pages or screens viewed, features used, and session events.
  • Performance, security, fraud-prevention, diagnostic, and error information.
  • Cookie or similar technology data if used on the website or app.

We use this information to operate HippoSplit, keep accounts secure, detect abuse, understand product reliability, and improve the service.

AI And Receipt Processing

HippoSplit uses AI and parsing systems to turn receipt photos, uploaded images, and chat-style messages into structured expenses. To provide this feature, we may process the content you submit, related metadata, and the resulting extracted expense data.

AI may make mistakes. You remain responsible for reviewing and correcting expense details before relying on them.

How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • Create and manage accounts.
  • Create groups, record expenses, calculate balances, and help users settle up.
  • Show shared expenses and group history to the people you choose to share with.
  • Parse receipts, messages, and uploaded images into expense records.
  • Provide free and paid features, subscriptions, purchase history, and billing support.
  • Send account, security, product, and support communications.
  • Respond to support requests and investigate issues.
  • Improve reliability, usability, security, and product quality.
  • Prevent fraud, abuse, spam, unauthorized access, and misuse.
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.

How Information Is Shared

With Your Groups

HippoSplit is a shared expense service. Expense data you add to a group or share with another person may be visible to that group or person. This can include expense descriptions, amounts, currencies, payer details, split details, comments, receipt images, edits, settlements, and activity history.

You are responsible for choosing who you invite to a group and what you share with them.

With Service Providers

We may share information with vendors that help us operate HippoSplit, such as providers for hosting, databases, authentication, storage, payments, analytics, error monitoring, email delivery, AI processing, customer support, security, and fraud prevention. These providers may process information only as needed to provide their services to HippoSplit.

We may disclose information if needed to comply with law, legal process, government requests, enforce our agreements, protect rights and safety, investigate fraud or abuse, or support a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets.

Payments

Payments are processed by third-party payment providers such as Stripe or app store payment systems, if applicable. We may receive billing metadata such as customer ID, subscription status, purchase status, invoice information, plan type, and transaction identifiers. We do not store full payment card numbers.

Data Retention

We keep information for as long as needed to provide HippoSplit, maintain records, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, and enforce our agreements.

If you delete your account or request deletion, we will delete or anonymize personal information where reasonably possible. Some shared expense records may remain visible to other group members when needed to preserve their group history, audit trail, balances, or legal records.

Subscription, payment, tax, fraud-prevention, and support records may be retained for longer where required for accounting, legal, security, or dispute-resolution purposes.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect information. No internet or storage system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials and devices secure.

Your Choices And Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Export or receive a copy of your information.
  • Delete your account or ask us to delete personal information.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
  • Opt out of marketing emails.
  • File a complaint with a data protection authority.

Children

HippoSplit is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to HippoSplit, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

International Transfers

HippoSplit and its service providers may process information in countries other than where you live. Those countries may have different data protection laws. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.

Cookies And Similar Technologies

HippoSplit uses cookies, local storage, and similar browser technologies for two broad purposes:

  • Essential storage. We use necessary browser storage to operate the service, keep you signed in, remember basic preferences, protect accounts, prevent abuse, and make core features work. These are not optional because HippoSplit may not function correctly without them.
  • Optional analytics. On the HippoSplit landing page, we use analytics only if you allow it. Analytics helps us understand page visits and button clicks, such as which pages people read and which links help them get started. We do not use optional analytics to read your messages, expenses, prompts, receipt images, payment details, or group content.

For visitors in the European Union or United Kingdom, the landing page asks for your consent before any optional analytics start. We use your approximate location (country level) only to decide whether to show this banner; if we cannot determine it, we ask for consent anyway.

Your choice is saved in your browser, so the banner only appears once. You can change it at any time from the Cookie settings link in the landing-page footer. If you switch from allowed to declined, we stop optional analytics and clear the analytics data stored in your browser.

You can also control cookies through your browser settings, but some essential features may not work correctly if cookies or local storage are disabled.

Changes To This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will provide notice as required by law. The updated policy will be effective when posted unless stated otherwise.
